Ohio Barn after Heavy Snow Storm

This photo of a classic old wooden barn was made in the Dayton, Ohio area in December 2004.

My attitude toward winter is: once the leaves are down, it might as well snow. Snow makes the bare landscape glow with shades of white, gray and blue. It brings out forms and shapes never imaginable in the green of summer. This photo, I believe, illustrates that.

We had a heavy snowstorm that winter in southwest Ohio. It dumped. I was home for the weekend, there was nowhere else that I needed to be, I had plenty of food and film.

The storm pummeled us with the white stuff, blowing, drifting. Some spots were bare while others had huge mounds. The next afternoon, I ventured out, trudging through the knee deep snow. The sun was getting low, the light changing fast. Move it, boy. So many possibilities, so little time.

I worked my way around the backside of the barn. After several photographs of the low sun reflecting off the white paint of the west end of the barn, I retreated back the way I had come, enjoying the relative ease of where I had broken trail through the snow.

I decided to make the photograph seen here. So many intriguing shapes: snow mounds, wood, shadow, all juxtaposed in my mind's eye.

The simplest things are often the best.

Photo location: Brookvile, Montgomery County, Ohio.
