Big Falls in Winter, Quehanna Wild Area, Pennsylvania

"Big Falls" is a waterfall that is not large at all. It's merely a certain unnamed section of a small headwaters stream in the Quehanna Wild Area on the Elk State Forest, high up on the Allegheny Plateau in northwest Pennsylvania. The stream has a number of small falls tumbling down it, and this one was larger than some of the nearby ones, so I named it Big Falls. Everything is relative, after all.

In this winter image, the stream is unfozen, the spray from the waterfall having formed shelves of ice on the rocks around it.

Photo location: Red Run area, Quehanna Wild Area, Elk State Forest, Elk and Cameron Counties, Pennsylvania.
