Sunset at historic Lees Ferry, the put-in point for all Grand Canyon river trips, is one of the most spectacular locations imaginable. Mile Zero on the Colorado River (a political designation defining water rights between the Upper Colorado River Basin and the Lower), even today it's one of the few places to access the river. Highway bridges cross over it, but getting down to it is still much more limited. Good.
Sunsets at Lees Ferry require no cumulus clouds in order to be awesome. The desert cliffs take care of that. To the east are the Echo Cliffs, to the west the Vermilion Cliffs.
In this photo, the Vermilion Cliffs to the north do the heavy work. Nearly vertical, and composed of reddish sandstone, they are perfect for catching the sun's last rays and turning them into fire. As if that's not enough, the clear and nearly calm Colorado River lends its surface as a mirror, along with some gentle ripples.
