Great Point is the long, wild, outstretched sandy arm that is the northeast extension of Nantucket Island.
In this summertime view, I had driven a four-wheel-drive vehicle as far as allowed, the northern end of Great Point being off limits to most vehicles to protect critical shorebird breeding habitat. So I hiked the rest of the way here, which means trudging on sandy beach.
Great Point Lighthouse had recently had its exterior restored, and in this photo it gleams in the soft, salty summer air, ready to take on more hard North Atlantic Ocean winters.
