From Point Imperial on the Grand Canyon's North Rim in September, I attempted to take in the vastness. Staring like the stupid tourist I was, I did my best.
Mount Hayden in the relatively near distance helped. A massive fingertip of eroded rock, it gave me a sence of scale among the maze of canyon cliffls in the hazy distance.
So I focused my attention on The Mount. A mostly sheer pinnacle of rock sitting atop its base of red rock layers, the remains of which formed the partially forested slopes of pinyon pine and juniper sloping away from it. The past, and the future in a glance. Nothing would prevent the erosional forces from their incessant work. Nothing that I could imagine, anyway.
Grand Canyon's summits are unusual in that, from the rims, one looks down on them. Not up like most mountain peaks.
