Nantucket Sunrise: Moonset at Dawn, Hither Creek, Madaket
I was the Mate on a small charter fishing boat out of Madaket one season long ago.
When we didn't have a trip booked and the weather was favorable, we went commercial fishing for cod. This meant very long days, because we had to "steam" twenty miles east of the island on the North Atlantic, a trip that was about two and a half hours long. Then we would fish all day and return home with our catch.
Due to the long trip, we had to leave as early as possible, around 4 in the morning. In summer, it gets light that early on Nantucket, which at thirty miles at sea is way east in the Eastern time zone.
This photograph was made on one such morning. The captain and I had already fueled and loaded the boat with ice and cod fishing gear, and I was waiting for him to walk back down to the dock there at the public landing at Hither Creek, after parking his pickup truck. The full moon was setting in the west as the colors of a clear dawn warmed the scene. I had a few minutes to make this photo, then we got on the boat and were off for a long, long day of cod fishing.
