Outside my home along a sleepy stretch of historic Route 66 on the Coconino Plateau in northern Arizona, it turned out I had been a bit too sleepy as well. Stepping outside to gauge the chances for a good sunrise photo, I quickly dashed back inside for my camera.
Then, trotting down the shoulder of the road so as to get behind a powerline that would have been in the photo, I made a series of photos, then merged them into this panoramic image later. The cloud made an immense archway that spanned seemingly half the eastern sky. To take one ultra wide angle shot of it would not have done it justice. I have not seen anything like this kind of arching sunrise scene before.
It was all over in a couple of minutes. One of those times when you shoot first and ask questions later.
