Mertensia or Virginia Cowslip Wildflower (Mertensia virginica), Pennsylvania

These brilliant blue flowers are pink when in bud, as you can see in this photo. The trumpetlike flowers droop as if trying to pull the whole plant over. Tall flowers such as these are most easily photographed early in the day, when breezes are often lightest. This photo was taken in the afternoon, in York County, Pennsylvania. I had to wait patiently for occasional calm moments between gusts of a light breeze, camera ready on the tripod and cable release in hand.
