Squirrel-corn Wildflower (Dicentra canadensis), Ohio
Squirrel-Corn is a springtime woodland flower that gets its name from its roots, which resemble grains of yellow corn. Easily confused with Dutchman's-Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), Squirrel-Corn has flowers that are more heart shaped, and that lack the elongated spurs of Dutchman's-Breeches. The parsley-like compound leaves are interesting in how they are a light bluish-green in the center, becoming a darker green out toward the edges.
This photo was taken in Hueston Woods State Park in southwest Ohio, which has many acres of protected mature hardwood forest.
