We had exhausted ourselves, time wise, on a wonderful weekend visit to the North Rim unit of Grand Canyon National Park. It was September, and the aspen colors were glorious up there at 8,000-9,000 feet in elevation.
On the way out of the park, in one of the vast mountain meadows characteristic of the Kaibab Plateau from which the North Rim is formed, a small herd of bison were grazing right near the highway. The young ones were rolling around in a dusty spot, full of vim and vigor while the adults grazed and watched over them.
Bison are not native to the Kaibab Plateau. They were introduced, and their presence there is not without problems. Also, they are much smaller than the behemoths I've seen in Yellowstone National Park.
