This photo of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River in Yellowstone National Park was made from Artist Point.
It was October, meaning that the sun would set just about straight west of the scene, and early. We arrived at the point less than earlier than early. But we had been enjoying a great return visit to the park for much of the day, so who cares?
But when it comes to photographing in a revered location, I care. I was dismayed by the sun searing into my lens, about to disappear for the night. I thought at the time that this shot would be a waste of time.
As you can see by this photo, I love being wrong. The low angle of the light turns stretches of the Yellowstone River into silver, along with the mist arising from the fury of the Lower Falls. The multi-hued canyon walls in shadow provide both contrast and detail.
